Computing Terminology and Acronym Translation

Good Common Practice

"The best solution is prevention"

  • Don't mess around with your work computer. Never install anything that is not essential for its purpose. Any software loaded may interfere with production software already loaded.

  • Certain screensavers cause frequent errors and create unnecessary load on the workstation. Stay well clear of these!. They may be amusing but the endless problems they cause, aren't!

  • To avoid loosing saved information in the event of a blackout or a computer crash, make a habit of saving your work every 10 minutes, and make backup copies of important documents
    * Making backup copies is strongly advised. Sometimes it is not possible to recover
    lost information.

  • Make sure you record any licence numbers that appear on Software packages you purchase and stay legal. Store the Software in a safe place after it has been installed, you may need it again.

Untold problems can be caused by freely downloaded and bootleg, (unlicensed) software. Don't risk it.

  • Don't get frustrated with your workstation. Throwing it out the window never solved anything! Take a break, relax, then work around your dispute or try to devise a logical solution after you have cleared your head. Alternatively, Yield Management Support or Training is available to our customers.
(see Services / Training or Support)

  • When downloading updates from internet, record the website and the updates applied. Store the downloaded files on diskette if possible and file them with the original software. Always check if updates are relevant. Don't apply updates blindly. For example the latest Word 2000 updates includes a number of security fixes which may prevent other programs from working. Usually the company website will indicate whether the update is suitable for your requirements.
